  1. Yes, I think sci-fi can teach people to embrace diversity using surrogate minorities. I learned from Star Trek episodes like Let That Be Your Last Battlefield, or Metamorphosis, or any number of others. At the same time, though, I think even while Star Trek was preaching these things, it didn’t always manage to live up to them. The original series was probably as progressive as a show could get at the time, but still. I firmly believe that LGBT+ people are accepted in the Federation, all the ideals that Star Trek preaches are consistent with that, but there aren’t actually any LGBT characters on Star Trek. There comes a point where there needs to be actual representation of actual minorities.
